Dr. Christopher Kyba arbeitet am Geographischen Institut der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und am GFZ Helmholtz-Zentrum für Geoforschung. Er hält einen Vortrag zum Thema „EYES VS. RADIOMETERS – A LIGHT POLLUTION ENIGMA“.
Emissions of artificial light into the night environment have been increasing in most countries globally for well over a century. The current rate of change,
however, is not well constrained. Satellite measurements of Earth’s radiance atnight at the top of atmosphere suggest a global rate increase of about 2% per
year, whereas citizen science observations of star visibility suggest a much larger rate of sky brightness increase of 7-10% per year. This talk will present the
different measurement techniques and their results, and then suggest possible explanations for the discrepancy, and how they might be tested.
