Taking part is everything - even if it wasn't enough to win this year, the young physics talents from the region are already looking forward to the next GYPT competition.
There was a special break from everyday school life for seven young physics talents from the region at the national competition of the German Young Physicist Tournament (GYPT) from March 1 to 3, 2024 in Bad Honnef. The seven young people had previously prevailed in the GYPT regional competition, which took place at the GYPT Center at RUB, and were allowed to compete against over 20 other teams from all over Germany in the GYPT physics competition of the German Physical Society.
At the German Young Physicist Tournament, teams of school students research challenging questions in physics for which no solution has yet been found. They present their results to a panel of experts and other research teams in English in 12-minute presentations. At the national competition, the teams compete in four to six matches, depending on their size.
At the end of this year's competition, the teams from the GYPT center in Bochum did not make it onto the winner's podium, but the participating students and accompanying teachers were still pleased with the success of the event. Teacher Stefan Wentzel from Bochum particularly emphasized that many new young people could be reached with the format and that the participants would like to compete again in the next round.
Preparations for the next GYPT competition will begin in fall 2024. Interested students can find all relevant information on the website of the German Young Physicist Tournament. All students from the region can of course also contact the GYPT Center at RUB directly.
