Saturday Morning Physics on Nov. 18, 2023: Stellar Nest Fledglings - The Fascinating World of Run-Away Stars

13.11.23 | Saturday Morning Physics, Event

On November 18, 2023, the faculty invites you to the Saturday Morning Physics. Speaker is Prof. Dr. Dominik Bomans with a talk on "Stellar Nest Fledglings - The Fascinating World of Run-Away Stars".

Whether it's the smallest particles or great discoveries - Saturday Morning Physics offers exciting physics topics for everyone. The lecturers of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy present topics from different fields of physics in an understandable way. On November 18, 2023, Dominik Bomans, astrophysicist at the Astronomical Institute, will talk about "Stellar Nest Fledglings - The Fascinating World of Run-Away Stars":

When new stars form, this usually happens in company, the new stars create stellar associations and star clusters. Through close encounters some stars can reach such high velocities that they can leave the gravitational field of the star cluster, they become "run-away" stars, stellar nest-fugitives. This is not uncommon for massive stars, and they move at supersonic speeds through the surrounding interstellar medium. The interaction of motion, stellar wind, and interstellar medium produces circumstellar nebulae (bow-shocks ~ bow waves) with very interesting properties. Extremely fast run-away stars are formed when they encounter supermassive black holes. These stars are accelerated so much that they can leave not only their birth cluster, but their galaxy. The talk will give an overview of the world of run-away stars and the effects on their environment.

Prof. Dr. Dominik Bomans

The faculty cordially invites all interested parties to attend the lectures at the St. Paul's Church Bochum during the winter semester. As in previous years, there will be fresh waffles and coffee before the lecture. Here you can find all information about the start and location of the lectures:
